Sky Sports has announced a new pop-up channel for its NBA and NFL fans: Sky Sports USA.
This dedicated channel represents a landmark moment for UK-based fans of the NBA, as it combines the current popularity of the NFL in the UK, with the often-overlooked NBA. As many #NBAintheUK fans will attest, the league has been mistreated by countless broadcast rights holders over the past three decades.
Good to see Sky look like they are investing in this! NBA on BT always seemed like an afterthought— ᴅᴀɴ*** (@BigDandyDan) December 20, 2018
The new channel, which launches in January, is a sign of intent from Sky – and it’s a refreshing one.
They are taking this seriously. The NBA is not a joke.
This channel will present the NBA to a wider audience, and one that is already heavily invested in the NFL. Combining these two sports’ audiences is the single most sensible move any broadcaster has made in the UK.
“Every year, the NFL and NBA London games sell out in a matter of minutes and every year the following for both sports in the UK gets bigger. It’s a big month for both, with the road to the Super Bowl in NFL and the London and Martin Luther King games in the NBA – it’s a perfect time to launch a pop-up channel to make sure our customers get the very best of American sports.”
Barney Francis, Sky Sports Managing Director
The channel will quite literally pop-up, on air from 3 January-5 February, which is a critical period in the US sports calendar, including the NFL’s Super Bowl.
For NBA fans, 21 January will be Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which will be spearheaded by all four NBA games on the channel, starting from 5.30pm. MLK Day has created many standout NBA moments, including the infamous Trent Tucker 3-pointer vs Chicago, so let’s hope for some more. They are games that have traditionally been a highlight for UK based fans, combining fan friendly tip-off times with competitive action.
The current breakdown for the channel’s offerings is as follows:
- 40 live games from across both sports
- Every game from the NFL playoffs, including Super Bowl LIII from Atlanta
- The NBA London Game 2019 on January 17 between the Washington Wizards and New York Knicks
- All four games from the NBA ’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- A huge range of programming across both sports, including episodes of NBA Classic Games, NBA Champions and much more
Let us hope that this pop-up channel is a success and that we receive a permanent channel in the not-too-distant future.
